Sania Mirza was born into a Muslim sports family on 15 November 1986. And thus, had a lot of interest in different sports from the very beginning. Sania Mirza and her younger Sister Anam were raised as religious Muslim women in Hyderabad. As she belonged from a sports-loving family, her interest in sports was built from a very young age. And she started playing tennis and at the age of six. Though she chose to be a tennis player, she also completed her studies thoroughly.

At the Age of 15, Sania Mirza shifted her entire focus on tennis, as earlier she was a good athlete in many sports. And started to enhance her skills to make it as a professional player. Later, at the age of 18, she turned professional and her life changed for good.

Professional Career of Sania Mirza

Sania Mirza when started her career at junior level won 10 singles titles and 13 doubles titles as a junior player. Her first coach and mentor were her father and made her play at the junior level. He himself was a Sports Journalist but was highly passionate about sports. After looking at the success at the junior level she changed to a professional player in 2003, with an amazing start to her career.

Turning Professional & first five years

Sania Mirza started her professional career with an AP Tourism Hyderabad Open in her hometown itself, in 2003. But lost to Evie, in straight three sets. Further, she played Qatar Ladies Cup, but had a tough-luck, and lost in the first round for qualifying itself. She then had a start to winning matches in the Fed Cup, and then also won the 2003 Wimbledon’s Doubles Title with Alisa Kleybanova.

Sania Mirza had a total of 4 wins in the ITF Circuit. Which got her into the Australian Open fir 2005, where she won the first two rounds with straight sets. But got defeated by the World Champion herself Serena Williams in the third, and was out of the tournament. And following the defeat, she won her first WTA Tournament the AP Tourism Hyderabad Open becoming the first Indian Women win the tournament. In the same year, she participated in Dubai, where she defeated Kuznetsova to reach the highest quarter-final of her career.

In 2006, Sania Mirza was seeded to the US Open being the first Indian Women to be seeded for the US Open. And also got a chance to play the French Open for the first time. But her game kept on improving with every tournament she played and started reaching new heights. She started her following year 2007 with a high note, by making it to the semifinals of Hobart, quarter-finals in Banglore, the second round of the Australian Open, and semi-finals in Pattaya.

Grand Slams

Sania Mirza started her 2008 with Australian Open Singles and Australian Open Doubles but lost each of them to world-class players. And in the same year went through wrist injuries, which made her withdraw from all the tournaments ahead in the season.

The year 2009 was fruitful for her. Though she lost the Australian Open Singles in round two. But won her first Grand Slam, Australian Doubles Title along with Mahesh Bhupati. And later on, she was quite praised for her performances that came with her on-field partner Mahesh, which made her win many more tournaments and titles moving forward.

Her win was followed by a series of good performances in Singles where she reached the finals of Pattaya Women’s Open but lost the finals. She later played the Wimbledon Championship 2009, where she lost the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Where she lost in the third round partnering along with Chuang and Mahesh.

Being Successful

Yet another successful combination came in 2013-14 for Mirza. Where she was seeing partnering with Cara Black. And both of them played many semi-finals, quarter-finals, and finals with her, of US Open. Leading to a historic win for both of them in 2014, by winning the WTA Finals defeating Hseih Su-Wei and Peng Shuai with the heaviest defeat. Breaking the record made 41 years ago and was the last match Mirza and Black played together.

Sania Mirza at the Age of 28, went on to win her first mixed double US Open title along with her partner Bruno Soares.

In 2015, Mirza started her doubles season with the world rank number 6 and rising through the ranks throughout her career. And started her new partnership with Hseih Su-Wei after a successful pair up with Black. But did not last for long enough, they only played a few decent matches.

Sania Mirza’s next pair was with Martina Hingis a Swiss national player. The pair together won India Wells, Miami Open, Family Cup 2015, and reaching the finals of the Italian Cup. After their win at the Family Cup, Mirza became the first lady to be world number 1 in the doubles. Later, both of them together won the Wimbledon Championship Doubles and the Australian Open. Which became Sania’s third Grand Slam Title. And kept on winning matches till 2016.

Both of them mutually decided to split up after some bad performances. And Mirza won a couple of titles with Barbora but had to stop playing because of sustaining long injuries.

Winning Comeback 2020

Sania Mirza remained off the professional court for two long years. After her injuries, later Sania Mirza was about to be a mom at the age of 31. And later returned on the field with Nadia Kichenok. Both of them played the Hobart International in January 2020, and one the tournament. But lost their first round in the Australian Open because of Sania Mirza’s injury.

Other than this, she was recognized globally as the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia, making her the first South Asian Woman that has been appointed in history.

Sania Mirza and her personal life have always gained a lot of attention. In 2009, Sania Mirza was all set to marry her childhood friend. But was canceled. Later, Sania Mirza started dating her now-husband Shoaib Malik.

Sania Mirza was seen spending the last couple of years to be with her baby. And her career again began after her son turned 1.
